Internet in Algeria.. Heavy demand and limited speeds: 39 million subscribers
Algeria recorded a huge jump in the number of Internet subscribers, reaching 39 million, which represents the vast majority of the population.
According to the latest statistics of the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications, the percentage of mobile Internet subscribers out of the total population in Algeria has reached 90%, representing 39 million subscribers out of 45 million people.
While the number of fixed-line Internet subscribers reached about 4 million, which represents 44% of the population of Algeria.
On the other hand, the Algerian Ministry acknowledged the shortcomings recorded in the country's Internet related to the speed of its flow, as it revealed its intention to develop international links and the capabilities of the international band passing through and the national transport network, while improving the speed of the flow of mobile networks.
The ministry also aims in the medium term to ensure the fast and very fast flow of the Internet everywhere and for everyone to reverse Algeria's regression in the international classification, which makes it one of the world's most backward countries in terms of the speed of Internet flow.
And Algeria remained “the bottom” of the world’s countries in terms of the speed of Internet flow, and a report of the global index “Speed TSAT” showed last April that Algeria occupies the 174th place globally in the ranking of the speed of mobile and fixed Internet flow.
He pointed out that the speed of fixed-line Internet in Algeria does not exceed 5078 megabytes per second, and 15.07 megabytes for the speed of mobile Internet flow.
While Internet prices in Algeria remain the "bright spot", as it is considered the cheapest in the Maghreb, in light of the government's continued monopoly on the sector in ensuring and distributing the Internet through the "Algeria Post" and "The Postal and Electronic Communications Control Authority."
A research report by the British "Cable" website, during which a comparison process was conducted between Internet prices in the five Maghreb countries, monitoring the differences in Internet prices in the countries of the world, indicated that Algeria topped the Maghreb countries in terms of low Internet prices, while it ranked 16th globally.
The result of the study was that the Algerian pays an average of $0.51 for getting 1 GB of internet.
Algeria connects 4 cables that provide Algeria with international bandwidth for the Internet coming from Europe, while the state company "Algeria Telecom" has allocated large investments to realize and secure projects to raise its capabilities in the field of international bandwidth.
